Fleas: |
|
| |
|
|
|
The
cat flea is the most common flea in Northern Ireland, although
many other close relatives do exist.
Fleas are a small reddish brown insect often visible to the
naked eye. They are obvious by their long back legs, which
obviously help them to jump onto a host for a hearty meal of
blood.
Fleas typically lay around 12 to 18 eggs at a time on their
host. The eggs then hatch out into the larval stage a few days
later. The progression is then through to a pupal stage and
after approximately 1 week, new adults emerge and search for
food.
Fleas jump onto a new ‘meal’ by sensing heat and vibration.
Their prolific mouth parts help them efficiently feed and then
leave the characteristic flea bite on their host. The bite is
typically on the lower leg where humans are concerned,
although they are often found all over the body.
Inexperienced DIY treatments often fail for a number of
reasons. A simple treatment by Expert Pest Control will
quickly eradicate the problem.
